Germany, 1935, racist laws instituted against Jews

The Jerusalem Post's feature "This day in history" reports that on September 15, 1933, Germany instituted racist laws against Jews and non-Aryans:

1935: In the Nuremberg Laws, Dr. Achin Gercke instituted a division between Aryans and non-Aryans. Jews (defined as anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent) were deprived of citizenship.

The Nazis issued instructional charts to help distinguish Jews from Mischlinge (Germans of mixed race) and Aryans

The Nuremberg laws also made it forbidden for Jews to marry or have sexual relations with Aryans or to employ young Aryan women as household help. (An Aryan being a person with blond hair and blue eyes of Germanic heritage.)

For those anti-Zionists out there that keep sending me hate mail, read this: never will we give up the State of Israel, the only country that would fight for my rights as a Jew; never will we be left alone and without defense if some crazy German or Arab Nazy decides he wishes to exterminate us. Long live the State of Israel!

I copy below an article that gives more details on the Nuremberg laws.

The Nuremberg Race Laws
The History Place

The Nuremberg Race Laws of 1935 deprived German Jews of their rights of citizenship, giving them the status of "subjects" in Hitler's Reich. The laws also made it forbidden for Jews to marry or have sexual relations with Aryans or to employ young Aryan women as household help. (An Aryan being a person with blond hair and blue eyes of Germanic heritage.)

The first two laws comprising the Nuremberg Race Laws were: "The Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor" (regarding Jewish marriage) and "The Reich Citizenship Law" (designating Jews as subjects).

Those laws were soon followed by "The Law for the Protection of the Genetic Health of the German People," which required all persons wanting to marry to submit to a medical examination, after which a "Certificate of Fitness to Marry" would be issued if they were found to be disease free. The certificate was required in order to get a marriage license.

The Nuremberg Laws had the unexpected result of causing confusion and heated debate over who was a "full Jew." The Nazis then issued instructional charts such as the one shown below to help distinguish Jews from Mischlinge (Germans of mixed race) and Aryans. The white figures represent Aryans; the black figures represent Jews; and the shaded figures represent Mischlinge.

The Nazis settled on defining a "full Jew" as a person with three Jewish grandparents. Those with less were designated as Mischlinge of two degrees: first degree - two Jewish grandparents; second degree - one Jewish grandparent.

After the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, a dozen supplemental Nazi decrees were issued that eventually outlawed the Jews completely, depriving them of their rights as human beings.

Don't distort the facts: the law that was passed today defines that Palestinians that marry Israelis will not get Israeli citizenship - people can still get married and live together.

Although I am personally against such a law, this is very different than what the Germans did: denying marriage altogether between "Arians" and Jews and removing all rights from "non-Arians" and Jews.

Furthermore, no one in Israel has talked about removing the Israeli citizenship from existing Muslim Israelis - they are indeed 15% of Israel's population, have the right to vote and are representd by Muslim Arab parties in Israel's parliament (see the History page for more details).

To continue on your dellusional comparison of Israel with Nazi Germany, how many Jewish parties were represented in Hitler's parliament? None - most were being murdered in the gas chambers.

As for the Palestinians misfortunes, when a majority of them stop supporting Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Arafat's Al-Aksa brigades - groups whose only goal is to murder and destroy - they might have a chance of a better life.

On the other hand if they continue to wish for the destruction of Israel and the genocide of her citizens, all they'll get is the dellusional support of European leftists and people like you.

Not much.

Although there is a god bit of truth that the recent laws passed by Israel differ from the Nuremburg Laws, in that the Nuremburg Laws dealt with maintaining ethnic "purity" and the law passed by the Knesset focus on national security.

Which is not to say that there probably aren't certain Israelis and Palestinians rubbing their hands together with glee that those dirty israelis/palestinians will no longer be alble to marry their pristine israeli/palestinian son or daughter. Racists, afterall, come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and political positions.

However, the Israeli law and the Nuremburg laws share a commonality in that they are both incredibly misguided. The Nuremburg laws for obvious reasons and the Israeli law because it deals with the symptoms of terrorist attacks not the causes.

Those Israeli-by-marriage Palestinians who are commiting acts of terror in Israel are those who, naturally, have family living the generally appalling conditions in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which almost in many places essentially impoverished and overcroweded refugee camps that have grown into impoverished and overcrowed towns that are filled with angry and out of work men and women who are able to find it very convenient to blame Israel for their problems.

A Palestianian who has married an Israeli who then corresponds or visits relatives living in an area where the unemployment rate can fluctuate between 20 and 60 percent will naturally be somewhat more sympathetic to militant Palestinian causes. And this new law does mandate that those palestinians who gain israeli citizenship by marriage leave Israel. The marriage law is more likely to foster even more resentment towards Israel in the Palestinian regions than to bolster security. Anytime such economic and humanitarian disparities exist side by side its is only natural to expect that those stuck in the middle will make rash decisions.

Interesting! Reminds me of the restrictions being imposed on gays in the US as we speak (eg. ban on marriage, etc).

Are we headed towards a repeat of the past?

To David Melle:

You are incorrect in one aspect of your conversation: Jewish parties were represented in Hitler's parliament, as there were many Ranking Jews in Hitler's army. Indeed, the more I research it, the more I believe that the Nazis weren't against Jews in general, and certainly not German Jews, but merely the Ostjuden which comprised of mainly Russian and Polish Jews.

[Thus, many German Jews and Mischlinge thought Hitler based his anti-Semitic tirades on Ostjuden who had emigrated from the "land of Bolshevism." The Nazis reinforced this preconception when they issued decrees against Ostjuden in 1933 and later when they forced eighteen thousand of them to leave the Reich in 1938. Wolf Zuelzer, a 75 percent Jew, explained that German Jews maintained their prejudice against Ostjuden because of their cultural isolation and "primitive" lifestyle. Zuelzer wrote that "for the majority of German Jews, the Orthodox Ostjuden dressed in his caftan, fur hat and ritual side-locks was a frightening apparition from the Dark Ages." At the beginning of the twentieth century, "[m]any of the local Jewish communities in Germany refused to allow Eastern Jews to vote in community elections on the grounds that they were not German nationals." Dr. Max Naumann, a Jew and a retired World War I army major and founder of the militant right-wing organization of National German Jews, wrote Hitler on 20 March 1935 that he and his followers had fought to keep Ostjuden out of Germany. Naumann felt that these "hordes of half-Asian Jews" were "dangerous guests" in Germany and must be "ruthlessly expelled." ]

Ponder this: peace is the only way. Respect for another's space, culture, religion, language and pysical appearance, among other things, is sacred beyond any insistence that "I am right and your not". The perpetuating cycle of retribution and revenge is the most distasteful and damaging human characteristic, and please, I implore you, especially if you live in a country which is undergoing conflict, reach out to a new generation, embrace peace, it is the only way to survive. Support a peace advocating group if you must support someone.
Violence breeds violence. The intellectualising of conflict, and the search for a history does not solve the here and now. Right now, if the world were to stop moving, and time stood still, we are all blameless. We want to live together, we want to be happy, we want to be tolerated, and we want not to be in fear of our lives. Those who are brought up to be angry and intollerant do so because of the legacy left them by those who should have known better.

Mandela is a terrific example of a pragmatist, a humanitarian, and an exceptionally successful one at that. Please, anger and death begins with the individual's incapacity to see tolerance and love. The situation of which we speak is impenetrably complicated and horrible. Lives on every side, loss from every person. We are all capable of love and suffering. Try to end this now. My thoughts are with you all, and I mean all.

Coming from a non-Jewish background, I was wondering whether someone of further knowledge than I could delineate on two questions I have:

If you were a) either a convert who had no discernible Jewish grandparents or parents or b)had no known Jewish ancestry but were married to a Jew, were you considered a Jew? The supplementary decree of Nov. 14 1935 only states that a first-degree Mischlinge is Jewish if he or she marries a Jew, is part of a Jewish community on or after the proclaimation date or was the product of a marriage or non-marital intercourse after the same proclaimation date. Were Mischlinge considered citizens, either first or second degree?

The chart above claims that marriage between Mischlinge Grade 2 is strictly forbidden, presumably because it would require two-half Jews in racial terms to produce a child. Who then will Mischlinge be able to marry?

I wnder if muslims are allowed to vote in Israel. It is a Democracy, isnt it???

Posted by: Soldier on February 17, 2005 10:32 AM

Soldier: Yes, there are over one million Arab Muslims who are Israeli citizens and have the right to vote in Israel.

They also have political parties of their own and are represented in the Knesset, Israel's parliament.

So you are right: Israel is not only a Democracy, it is the only Democracy in the Middle East, among over 20 Arab Muslim countries who are either Theocracies or Dictatorships.

I truly and genuinely apologize for the events that occurred since the time of Hitler's reign as chancellor to the day that the Jews were liberated from concentration camps. I stumbled upon this website upon completing a report. You cannot get mad at those who do not believe this happened. No one wants to believe this happened. I dont want to believe this happened but I know that it did and I apologize on behalf of humanity. The most inspiring Holocaust survivor is Eliezer Wiesel, who still practices his religion after watching his father perish in the hands of the Nazis. I would love to meet Mr. Wiesel and personally apologize to him for his tragic experience. He is the most commendable person that I have known. May everyone be blessed and may every Jewish survivor be blessed more @-->--

I am a second generation survivor, and my family sufferd greatly durring that time;we are not Jewish, but that didn't matter to the national socialists. You just had to make the wrong remark;that was overheard by someone or defend the Jewish people to share the same fate.

You explain at the top that "After the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, a dozen supplemental Nazi decrees were issued that eventually outlawed the Jews completely, depriving them of their rights as human beings." What were these supplemental Nazi decrees. I have been unable to locate them and I am doing reasearch on the topic as of now. If you can please email me it would be a great help or you can otherwise post them. No website seems to have them.

Posted by: Paul Friedman on October 11, 2010 06:59 PM

Paul: a simple 'Google' search on 'Nuremberg laws supplemental decrees' shows dozens of sites with information on them. Here's one example - the Wikipedia entry on the Nuremberg Laws - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuremberg_Laws - just look for 'supplemental'.
