I was in Da Nang in 1972 and me and another Marine went inside a AC-130. The WOW part of the ship was the switch that had positions for different rates of fire, 3,000, 6,000, or 9,000 rounds per minute. My friend Ralph was looking though the scope and where he looked the guns looked.
Did see one fire at night, we were at the base and it looked like lava was being poured from the plane with all the tracers going down.

...concerning the ac 130 video of an attack upon an Islamic terrorist camp in Afghanistan.
I have come across many references which say (amongst other things) how it is wrong to attack a Mosque or a person praying at such a facility. HOWEVER, I live very close to the infamous Finsbury Park Mosque here in London UK where the firebrand cleric Abu Hamza preaches death and hatred to all so-called non-believers of any faith other than that of Islam.
Last week 150 armed Metropolitan Police officers raided the mosque looking for arms, explosives etc. What they DID find there should not have been found in a place of so-called worship.
Electic stun guns (Tazars), an imitation hand pistol, chemical and biological suits and literature pertaining to such items. Dozens - yes dozens of false passports and HUNDREDS of false credit cards.
They arrested 7 men of whom 5 are Algerian known troublemakers and yesterday at Bow Street magistrates court one of the men was charged with terrorist activity and remanded into custody.
This is hardly indicative of peaceful worship and is a display of what goes on in the mosques WORLDWIDE ...they are used for planning terrorist activities and for hiding people AFTER they have committed such acts.
As such, they should have NO protection from being subject to search (and destroy?) at any time that the athorities may deem it neccessary.
In the Midlands (Birmingham) there is a Mosque (terrorist hide-out?)named the Sadam Hussien Mosque .......this is an afront to human dignity and should anyone have a spare couple of hours and an 'ac130 spooky'on hand, please go to Finsbury Park North London and Birmingham England and .....DO YOUR DUTY.

i personally have to say that i love those aircraft i have worked with them on a few occassions i am a forward air controller in the US Air Force and am currently in afghanistan fighting the "war on terrorism". Anyways i just want to say that those are probably one of the best aircraft we have in our inventory today for close air support missions and such. Because I live in Europe - the continent, that is - I am confronted every day with people who have become so used to Uncle Sam doing what needs to be done when things go out of hand, that they have turned, well, decadent, I guess. Most Europeans live in a fairy world. Although I understand how such a collective state of mind has evolved, it surprises me how little resistance there is against it. It's just not right. If there's a article in a newspaper about a Palestinian killing little children in their home or on their way to school, you can bet that the next sentence goes something like "well, what do you expect; the guy's great grandfather owned a piece of land that now longer belongs to him." Or, at the least "the act was a retaliation for the killing by Israel of the alleged terrorist so-and-so".
Therefore, the tape, although it sooths my soul, isn't the way to go to win support for the cause in Europe. It would be much better to show a tape of the hounds beheading people in Iraq, for instance. That should wake them up. Then show the C-130.

I've been a C-130 crewmember for many years, but have not had the pleasure of serving on the Gunship. Isn't it amazing how over the generations our weapons technology has improved, and the overall loss of life (per capita) in wars has plummeted? It's great to see such precisioned fire power directed exactly where it needs to be, getting th job done and minimizing the loss of life uneccessarily.
For those of you who think violence is NOT the answer, sometimes any other answer might leave your family dead.
I only speak for myself, but I love my family too much to not protect them. If you don't love your family, you may have the luxury of being a pacifist (I risk my life protecting your right to be a pacifist). The wonderful thing about America is that due to our superior military, you can be a pacifist if you want (our military is all volunteer). I can only hope that not everyone makes that choice, because as we have seen proven, Pacifism allows EVIL to thrive.

Very interesting...until I reached the end and saw it was a film of an AFGHANISTAN operation, not Iraqi. Hey...the problem we face as of now is in IRAQ! Has any of this footage brought us one inch closer to that bastard arch-villian bin Laden? Beat your chests all you like -- but we should have stayed in Afghanistan until we had bin Laden's head on a stick. It is still not clear to me why we're in Iraq. So we blew up a few single operatives near a mosque? Big deal. With this firepower, how could we miss? Great video. My late father flew an AC119 Shadow gunship in 1969 against the NVA in Vietnam. The Shadow was the predecessor to the AC130 Spectre. The Shadow was armed with 4 miniguns (7.62 cal. electric gatling guns). Happy to see the Shadow's big brother is far more deadly and powerful. As for Israel, most of us in the US support you 100%. If our neighbor Mexico was killing thousands of Americans in terrorist attacks, we'd have already invaded and destroyed their country. The Israelis have shown remarkable patience.

First time poster here from Birmingham in the UK and just saw the footage and read all your thoughts.The pilots were obviously careful that they had to had to limit the area of destruction and leave the mosque untouched so I admire their control under difficult circumstances while risking their own lives.

I also agree with the Matt J who called on the muslim world to unite against terrorism. After all Isaac and Ismael were brothers and shared the same core set of values, love god and your brother etc even though their paths split and two faiths emerged. Personally I have no faith, just a moral code no different than a good christian, muslim, jew, hindu, sikh.

One thing that does concen me is the reliabilty of information on the ground. A desparate nation living far below the poverty line isn't the best environment to gather unbiased data concerning terrorist movements. Each Middle Eastern nation seems to me, to be pocketful of splintered factions each trying to screw the other one over (sectarian deathsquads in Baghdad etc)

Is it just me that thinks Islam is engaged in yet another relgious war? Only this time I think it is a world war. We in the west (and you yids too) are being awfully nice about the whole thing. Our politicians in the UK are crying their wittle hearts out over ladies wot wear veils, you yids are in trouble for using cluster bombs, yanks are getting done for killing 'innocent' iraqi's etc.

What we need to do, is stop using all these big planes to drop bombs on these innocents. The only way you are going to get proper precision in this war is to actually hand-deliver the bombs to where they are most needed.

What I mean by this is to get some of our respective soldiers to sneak into arab hotels, tower blocks, restaurants and the like and actually leave the bombs there. This way, only civilians will get killed, not innocent bystanders.

When in Rome, as they say, do as the Romans do. When in the middle east, do as the arabs do. The arabs do not drop bombs from planes, they deliver them by hand to places where they can kill the most civilians.

Show some respect to their beliefs and methods, and they might quieten down a little.

I personally believe that Islamic populations are being affected (without their knowledge, of course) by an as of yet unidentified genetic brain disorder, or possibly a slow virus (now referred to as a PRION disease; Mad cow disease is one example) afflicting only Muslims, causing them (against their will, of course) to experience delusional thought and disorientation. A common example is the delusion of believing they are being commanded by God to kill themselves by wearing plastic explosives on their belts and blowing themselves up around large groups of children (not innocent ones, of course).

The delusion is multifaceted and remarkably consistent among large groups of Muslims in many parts of the world. A second aspect of the delusion is the belief that after self destruction, the Muslim will spend eternity having unlimited sex with a bunch of virgins.

This illness is now pandemic in many parts of the world and its etiology must be identified. In some cases, the delusions seem to be associated with dental decay and open sores on the scalp, leading those affected to wrap towels around their heads to stop the seepage of blood and puss. There are also reported cases of affected Muslims cutting other peoples heads off using blunt instruments and hanging them up on poles, apparently thinking they were streetlights.

With all the money we are spending on medical research, I propose shifting approximately 20% of the total annual budget and earmarking it toward finding a cure for this dreaded disease. If we do not, it has the potential to spread throughout the world and transform into a true epidemic.

Like all diseases, it is important to assign it a name. After a number of panel discussions with infectious disease specialists at several university medical centers, I have come up with what I feel is the best descriptor: "Allahringitis Bombopathy Delusional Disorder"

However, when I view the video, I have a hard time believing that the video is being taken from an AC130. How can such a jumbo jet remain stationary? The video appears to be taken from a relatively static (non-moving) position. The video appears to be taken from a helicopter, not an AC-130. Also, an AC-130 shoots thousands of rounds per minute. But if you watch the explosions, you have to acknowledge that the shots are sporadic, and large intervals of time lapse between shots/explosions. This is not how an AC-130 fires. Something does not add up here. Neither the video or the firepower appear to be coming from an AC-130.

I just wish to remark on the writen comments from the beginning of this article. Concerning the point that great care was taken not to hit the mosque: Personally, I do/did not get the impression that the concern was for the preservation of a worship site, but for the preservation of our reputation. Seems like a political call, and not one of religous respect.

In addition, there was (included in that subject) a remark that the 'terrorists' would not care about worship sites of others. while I CAN NOT AND DO NOT pretend to know what a terrorist would do, I can say WITHOUT A DOUBT that ISLAM ITSELF DOES NOT ALLOW the destruction of religous sites of worship. Under ISLAMIC LAW, places like that (regardless of religon) is to be PROTECTED.

I always wanted to talk to someone like you, I agree that the "boys" in the video were careful not to hit the mosque and all, but that does not mean that their present in all good. The war between Al Qada and the USA is a mistake on both sides. I think that you're right if extremists would have attacked they would not give a shit about a church or a family, but you have to think who has the luxury to think about these things, like the solder in Iraq who killed like 3 families because he thought that he was in danger. I do not agree with neither but I understand how things happen and why, this whole issue between Islamists and the US started with in 91 and the core of it is ideological not material; therefor the solution should be of the same fashion. Force could be used to prevent attacks but the major reply to extremism should be a counter ideology! Until the USA starts acting this way, it will never win this war, because the terrorists understand this very will and spend most their effort on the ideological side...

I am opposed to violence and war. I do not think either are the answer and they're certainly not ideal. However, I do realize that in certain circumstances there are no other real options. I respect the men and women that fight to keep the terrorist's violence from reaching our homes.
