France, January 2003: Rabbi stabbed in Paris synagogue

Although French politicians will deny it, anti-Semitism seems to be ubiquitous in France:

A rabbi was stabbed Friday night in a Paris synagogue by an unknown assailant who than fled, Israel Radio reported.

According to the radio the assailant stabbed Rabbi Gabriel Farhi, 34, in the stomach, shouting "Allah Wakbar we will kill you" before running away. Farhi said the assailant rode a motorcycle and had been wearing a helmet.

Farhi, who was lightly wounded, was treated at a hospital where they removed the knife, before being released. Farhi told the radio that this was not the first time he or his family had been threatened and that very morning he had received a threat.

Paris police are investigating the incident. The same synagogue was gutted by fire six months ago, but French police closed the investigation, ruling that the blaze was caused by an electrical fault.

The community is known for its activities to encourage coexistence between the faiths, in particular with France's Muslim community.
