Racist Greek composer calls the Jews "the root of all evil"

The Jerusalem Post (www.jpost.com) reports that a famous Greek composer has expressed blatantly anti-Semitic views without shame:

Greek composer and cultural icon Mikis Theodorakis added his contribution to the anti-Semitic miasma rising in parts of the world by characterizing the Jews as the root of the world's evils.

Theodorakis, a towering figure in Greek music best known outside his native land for scoring the music for the film Zorba the Greek, took his shot at the Jews at a press conference to launch a new book.

"We, the Greeks, did not turn aggressive like them because we have more history," Theodorakis was quoted by Y-net as saying. "Today it is possible to say that this small nation is the root of evil. It is full of self-importance and evil stubbornness."

Mr. Theodorakis shows that one can achieve great fame and still be a low life scum European racist bastard.

Greek composer adds voice to anti-Semitic chorus
By HERB KEINON, Nov. 11, 2003, Link

According to the Y-net report, the Greek education and cultural minister were in the audience at the time, but did not respond.

Theodorakis, responding to recent comments by a Greek statesman that the Greeks and Jews are similar because neither have friends, said, "The fact that we are very calm and did not turn aggressive like them is because we have more history. They only have Abraham and Jacob, who were shadows, while we have Pericles. Imagine what would happen in Greece if we were as aggressive as the Jews."

The composer added that the Greeks are not characterized by the fanaticism of the Jews.

Israel's Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling on Greek leaders and cultural figures to distance themselves from the remarks.

"The Israel public is utterly repulsed" by Theodorakis's "anti-Semitic comments," the statement said, and expressed regret that they were spoken by someone of his stature.

"We do not believe that the comments reflect the position of the Greek government, and therefore expect Greek leadership and cultural figures to denounce them," the statement read."

Labor Party head Shimon Peres, who returned Tuesday from a brief visit to Greece, said in response to Theodorakis comments that Israel's image in Europe is very bad. "There is anti-Semitism and a great deal of hatred to Israel," Peres said. "It is impossible to build a new Europe on old racist positions."

This article portrays you Jews the way you are. Although, it is by far incomplete.
Why are you people provoking nation against nation and everyone against you?
Adolf Hitler once said:
"The Jew has never created a civilization, yet he has destroyed hundreds."

The 'visitor from Romania' is clearly as much of a racist ignoramus as Hitler was. Jews were creating a great civilisation while Romanians and Germans (and even Greeks) were swineherds living in stinking hovels.

zoinistes are creating a nation by destroying a nation ..thats what is hapening in palestine. They try to make out that they are so innocent...are they really cz if they are why do they bulldoze civillian houses and destroy refugee camps and shoot innocent children....think b4 u ask 4 so much sympathy. You tell the story of every single person that is killed ...the palestinians cant do that ..necause no one listens to them and because so many of their ppl are killed everyday that they cant afford to be telling the entire world the story of every palestinian civilian that is brutally killed jst 4 being palestinian.
If you have a good reason to show that you are more innocent than the palestinians then tell me.

As a Greek-American, I am shocked to hear of this composer's views. Yet this article almost accuses all of the Greek people for one racist's actions, and that simply is not fair. Just because one person is an idiot does not mean that the rest of our people are too. During WWII my family hid jews from the nazis in their homes. So please, don't make it sound like you are biased against the whole nation.

It should not be forgotten that Theodorakis is a member of the Communist Party. Communist Parties are members of the greatest criminal international mafia the world has ever known, directly responsible for the deaths of 94 million people. As the great French writer and humanist Albert Camus said: the Nazis committed their great crimes against humanity in the name of only one people; the Communists committed their crimes against humanity in the name of all humanity." No one should be astonished at Theodorakis's remarks, programmed as they are by one of the greatest evils we know Communism, unfortunately still alive.

Though the remarks made by Theodorakis are reprehensible (as are the remarks made by those who support), I am also repulsed by the vulgar and hateful way that you present these articles to the public. As an American Christian who supports Israel, I implore you to report the news as it is presented. Allow the world to reach the conclusions that you so freely insert into your article. It will give you and this site more integrity in the long run. To label or imply that all of Greece shares the opinion of one is not only unjust, but places you in the same bad light as those you are writing about.

Theodorakis is not an anti-semite. For those that don't know Theodorakis and the greek resistance saved 8000 jews from the hands of the Nazis during world war II. He even wrote a baland called Mathausen in memory of all those that were killed in that nazi death camp. However in his efford to critisize the Sharon government some words were isolated and presented as if he believed that jews are the root of evill.
It is easy to forget the people that helped the jews in the hard times, especially when by discrediting them, you can avoid answering to their criticism about the policies implemented by the sharon government.

Greece is an anti-Semitic country. Why is Israel the only country in the world that gets criticized? This bum who made these comments also supports communist Cuba. To him, commies are good, Jews are bad. The most anti-semitis country in Europe is Greece. They hate anyone who is not Orthodox Christian (yes, catholics, protestants, mormons, etc.. I am from the Ukraine, believe me when I tell you that the Orthodox Church is a hateful supremist cult that hates anyone who is not a member of that Church.

Since Europe unleashed its most violent progrom during the last century the cultural decline has accelerated in light speed. And Mr. Theodorakis beloved Greece is nothing else than a third rate vacation center crowned with olives, feta cheese and silly narcissism (don't even talk about Romania -- or Austria, home of Adolf Hitler).

Actually Europe is finished. Because when you kill your brainpower you'll fail in every important matter. Anti-Semitism is ALWAYS the major sign of increasing stupidity and irrelevance.

semyon.... you are from ukraine.... therefore you have no idea about greece. you should all get your facts straight before you speak and start accusing a whole nation of an attitude. half the comments here accuse greece of racism.... half the comments here are racist towards greece... wake up to yourselves and take a long hard look in the mirror.

I would like only to say to "Ann" about the post:
" Jews were creating a great civilisation while Romanians and Germans (and even Greeks) were swineherds living in stinking hovels."
Yes, i agree that you had also a good civilisation in that time, but don't put in them same position the Romanians and Germans with the Greeks at least for the antient times and that the Greeks "were swineherds living in stinking hovels" the word "Architecture" is a greek word. And you know that the ancient greek had built a monument for the "one god"

Finally i would like to say that all the civilisations of the world have something to add to the "civilitation of humankinkind" and don't be so close minded. Thank you and sorry for my english(i am greek)

I am appalled by the statement of Mikis Theodrakis. I am ashamed, and disgusted how he would speak for Greeks on a macro level. He talks about Greeks coming from such depth and intelliegence, yet his statement does not reflect that in the least.

If anything, Greeks should learn from the Jews.Through the centuries many countries attempted to make the Jews proselytes of their socio-religious paradigm. The have survived to maintain their identity. However, with the Greeks, we have trained our sons and daughters to look, and act as WASPy as possible just to "fit in". Personally, I feel our so called "pride" is just mere rhetoric. Do we hold any of our institutions sacred like the Jews do? What have the Greeks done to retain their history besides naming all their restaurants after thier great philosophers?
Furthermore, I have to admit, the Jews have a culture of success. They are taught from a young age that to be a scholar in the Torah, as well as the secular institutions. Is it not true that knowledge is power? That is why they choose to take the lead rather than follow.

The only reason why some Greeks, as well as others, make statements like Mr. Theodrakis,is because they are jealous of their success.

Only if us Greeks were as smart as the Jews! I am not just simply talking monetary success, but cultural.

With these kind of racist remarkes from rabid
Zionists it's no wonder the Jews in general are people with not many friends and too many enemies; that's not a genuine anti-Semetic remark, that's a neutral observation.

And the Ancient Greeks had a proud culture in the age of the Old Testament, laying down the foundations to modern medicine, science, philosophy and law.

The Ancient Isralites on the other hand laid the foundations of religious bigotry, fanticism and ignorance. The barbaric fictional scripture, the Old Testament, is the Ancient Hebrew's "gift" to the world and it spawned the dangerous Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, plus 3000 years of mutual hatred.

That too is not really an anti-Semtic opinion; that's a mutual observation.

And I wish no harm to anybody and I don't share the same irrational hatred of Israel and the Jews. That stupid behavior is associated with Christians, Nazis and Islamofacists, three ills that ironicly came from Judaism.

But then again Abrahamic creed has no basis in logical ethics and rational thought.

And as for the Israli-Palestinian conflict; I do not really care either way, it's a scrap of dusty "Holy" land promised to two people by a fictional God in the fictional Old Testament and the fictional Koran. They are welcome to it and I hope they will settle their differences with minimum bloodshed.

And I'm also not the biggoted type who like to see Israel pushed into the sea, it has existed for 50+ years I think it's a little too late to change anything now.

And finally as for Mikis Theodorakis; he's a complete turd who should really know better, he's really letting down such a proud people such as the Greeks, plus Greece has had the detrimental effect of Orthodox Christianity on it's once proud culture.

So it's no wonder Greece has a negative attitude towards it's close neighbours such as Islamic Turkey and Jewish Israel. We should all adopt agnostic paganism, I tell ye.

first of all Theodorakis is the composer of the album "MAUTHAUSEN".I rate his composition as one of his best works. The lyrics were made by Iakovos Kabanellis, a great Greek-Jew writer and poet who survived from Mauthausen concentration camp.Iakovos Kabanellis is also the writer of a book about his experience in Mauthausen.I dare to say that Kabanellis' book can be combarable to Primo Levi's book about his experience in Auswich.
Stop calling everyone who criticise Israel goverment fascist, racist and anti-semitic and put a wrong interpretation on eyeryone who dissagree with your policy against Arabs. The tragedy of the holocaust does not legalise israel murderous policy against children and civilians.
In relation to the guy of Ucraine generalization and simpleness I would answer to him that the fact of the thousand women of Ucraine are working as prostitutes in Europe does not imply that Ucraine is a Prostitutes' Nation.

first of all, to the person who said that communism is evil, i doubt Theodorakis' views are influenced by a political ideology, one which was founded by a German Jew, Karl Marx. what's more, many communist societies profess atheism. also, don't forget that communists were sent to concentration camps along with Jews, as well as Roma people (gypsies), homosexuals, disabled people, etc. second of all, this whole comparison of ancient civilizations is ridiculous. i'm greek-american and i don't go around bragging to people about how my "ancestors" discovered democracy and this and that. what's the point? it doesn't make me better than anyone and, to be perfectly honest, most people who go around wearing their ethnicity on their sleeve in reality don't know shit about it. i have so many relatives who are so pressed to let everyone know they're greek but ask them what they think about plato and they'll have no clue what you're talking about. all they know is about how much they love roasted lamb and various talentless pop singers. third of all, if you're gonna present something, do it fairly. you make it seem like all greeks share the same views and, clearly, we don't. finally, nobody's hands are entirely clean. greeks aren't innocent, jews aren't innocent, and so on. when people quit pretending that they're guilt-free, we'll all be much better off.

Ann. You really think Hebrews had a greater civilazation than what was going in Greece. Ha what a joke. Two words Minoans and Mycenaeans. They were highly civilized and writing from 3000 bc and the Mycenaeans were writing from 2000 bc. Later both Greeks and Hebrews adjusted the phoenician script, though the greeks were smart enough to add vowels and pave the way for the Western alphabet. Any way, the Hellenic way looms over all laguages. Any every form of philosphy and knowledge is a discovery of the Hellens.Knowlegde not religon Greeks have real history

Greeks like to put things in their rear ends, including their heads, which explains whats going on here.
